  ALLEGIANT -- EPILOGUE
EPILOGUE
Two and a half years have passed since the big changes occurred to Chicago. People travel back and forth from Chicago and the fringe now. Many things have changed.

Since so much time has passed, Evelyn and Tobias feel that it’s okay for Evelyn to go back to Chicago. Tobias has relocated to an apartment there where he now lives an ordinary life. He brings his mom to his apartment on this special day.

Today, they’re going to go spread Tris’ ashes. Had everything remained the same, today would have been the choosing ceremony. It’s a fitting day to let Tris go.

Evelyn is going to stay with Tobias for a while until she can get her own place. She reveals that Tobias is now going into politics.

Before they leave to spread Tris’ ashes, Evelyn removes a gift for her son. When they were both Abnegation, Evelyn gave Tobias a small, blue sculpture. They weren’t supposed to have beautiful possessions when they lived as Abnegation, but they both broke the rules for him to keep it. She hung onto it as a symbol, a reminder of her brave, defiant son. Now, she’s returning it to him.

Soon, they leave to spread Tris’ ashes. They go to a train platform where they meet up with Christina, Zeke, Matthew, and Shauna. Shauna, who is still in a wheelchair, reveals new leg braces that Caleb helped make for her. She briefly demonstrates their potential to Tobias.

When the train comes by it stops for them. Cara is the one who seems to be controlling it. They all get on.

As they travel, Tobias reflects on the new positions they’ve all found in the city. They all have found new jobs that are well-suited for them. For example, Caleb works in a lab and Zeke works for the police.

The train reaches its destination and stops. As they leave the train, Tobias asks about Peter. Matthew says that he now works in an office in Milwaukee.

The group makes their way to the Hancock building. They take the elevator to its highest point and then climb a ladder to access the roof. The roof contains the zip-line the Dauntless once used. One by one, they go down the zip-line.

Eventually, it’s Tobias’ turn to go down the line. He has Zeke place Tris’ urn securely on his back with the lid off. Soon, Tobias confronts his fear of heights and he’s on his way down the line. Tris’ ashes spread in the sky as he zips towards the ground. At the bottom, his friends eagerly await him.

Later, as they head back to the train, Christina walks alongside Tobias to see how he is. He says he’s okay, even though things are always a little hard. Christina tries to lighten the mood by telling him that they have to live for the good moments in life. They have to be sure to recognize and enjoy these moments when they come along.

Tobias ends the novel with some of his own words of wisdom. He believes life inevitably damages everybody, but fortunately our loved ones can help fix us.
