  ALLEGIANT -- CHAPTER 19: TRIS
CHAPTER 19: TRIS

Tris gives Tobias a moment of privacy. He was hit hard with the fact that he isn’t actually Divergent. Tris doesn’t see it as a big deal, but Tobias does. Tris leaves the lab to give Tobias some alone time.

An excited Zoe finds Tris in the hallway. She’s stoked to tell Tris that an airplane ride has been planned for anybody interested.

Two hours later Tris finds herself in an airplane with Uriah, Christina, Cara, Peter, and Zoe. The only person not around is Tobias.

Before they take off, Zoe describes how the Bureau uses the airplane to watch over the fringe. She says that the fringe is a lawless, crazy area that isn’t controlled by the government.

Next, Karen the pilot comes out and introduces herself. She tells them how safe it is to fly. Soon enough, the plane is off and above the fringe. Zoe explains that the things they see down below are ruins from the Purity War.

Zoe has a special treat for them. They are going to fly over their old hometown of Chicago. Tris always wondered what the marsh would look like filled with water. Beyond the city, Tris is amazed to see a lake beyond the marsh that is filled with water.

Zoe describes how small Chicago is compared to the rest of the world. This makes Tris wonder what else is out there in the world. With this thought and with such an awe-aspiring trip, Tris begins to understand why her parents believed in God.

When they return to the Bureau, Tris begins to read her mom’s journal. Natalie was only sixteen when she began journaling at the Bureau. In the journal, she begins by describing her upbringing in Milwaukee. Natalie’s mother was as tough as nails while her father was a bit more sentimental. One day during an argument, her mother shot her father dead and that prompted Natalie to run away to the fringe.

Natalie’s description of the fringe more or less matches the description of the factionless’ living areas. They scrap things together in a poverty-ridden makeshift community.

While she’s living in the fringe, Natalie accidently kills a man when he’s attacking children. It’s at that point that Natalie is creepily picked up by David in a van and taken to the Bureau.

Tris puts the journal away, and Christina and Uriah enter the room. They describe how they’ve been observing Chicago via the live cameras. Then, Tris gives a bit of backstory to her friends about her mother. Tris says that the Bureau once was where her mother lived. The group, then, reflects upon where their “home” now lies. Things are so different now that even Chicago wouldn’t be home to them.

When Caleb comes in things feel a bit awkward. Tris isn’t on the best of terms with her brother, so Tris leaves with Uriah and Christina to the cafeteria.
