CHAPTER 16: TOBIAS
Tobias wakes up before everybody else and he begins walking down a hallway. He remembers how different the Dauntless compound was compared to this. Then, he begins to remember Amar when he lived at the Dauntless compound. Tobias recalls how Amar was the one who was with him for his first tattoo.
Amar finds Tobias wandering about and he begins a conversation with him. He describes how people from the outside began to quietly intervene when they found out the Divergents were being killed by Jeanine. His “death” was set-up so that he could escape the city and join the Bureau. Other Divergents, like George Wu, were also saved. Of course not all Divergents, like Natalie, were able to be saved.
Tobias describes the situation with Tori. She was so close to finding her brother, George, in the Bureau. Tori even killed Jeanine to avenge her brother’s “death.” Tori always assumed the Erudites were responsible for George’s death. But, apparently, he was able to escape.
Amar describes how he got away with faking his death. Another body, mangled and destroyed, was used to take the place of Amar. Then the Abnegation serum was used on a Dauntless woman to insert memories of his “death” inside her mind. Her account and the body worked in conjunction to fake his passing.
Tobias is angry at how he’s been fooled. He is, however, happy to see his old friend. Amar suggests that Tobias stay in the compound, since the larger municipal areas aren’t too safe. Tobias isn’t sure what he will do. He becomes especially confused when Amar tells him that Marcus will go on trial tomorrow.
