CHAPTER 44: TOBIAS
Tobias speaks to Amar and George before they leave. George is helping them out both by giving them a truck and by taking over in the control room for the night. He points out that snow is making the camera shots of the city hard to look at. George, who is ignorant of the real plan, is advised by Tobias to be inoculated from the memory serum soon. If Tris succeeds with her part of the plan, then George should remain himself.
Soon, the group is off in the truck driven by Amar. Christina, Tobias, and Peter all sit and wait as they sneakily drive towards Chicago. As they make their approach, Tobias tries to decide which parent’s memories he will reset—Marcus or Evelyn.
Amar is still under the impression that they’re going to Chicago to inoculate Uriah’s family and Christina’s family from the memory serum. So, he takes them to the area where the Allegiants have gathered. That’s probably where the families have taken refuge.
During the drive, Christina asks Amar to stop for a second so she can go out to use the restroom. As she steps out, she slyly slashes two of the truck’s tires. When they continue onward, it doesn’t take long for the tires to both go flat. With only one spare tire and two flats, Tobias suggests that everybody except for him head out on foot. He will stay behind to find a new truck while the others go inoculate the families. Peter insists to stay behind to help Tobias.
