  ALLEGIANT -- CHAPTER 10: TOBIAS
CHAPTER 10: TOBIAS

Tobias is back in the Dauntless compound, headed towards the fear landscape room. Once there, he injects himself with the serum that puts him in his fear landscape.

Firstly, he deals with his fear of heights. As he zip-lines, his rope breaks and he falls to the ground.

Secondly, he deals with his fear of confined spaces. He is suddenly in a box that is closing in from every side. Luckily, he conquers his fear and the box dissolves into pieces.

Thirdly, he turns into Marcus. He observes himself in a mirror strangling himself. He pictures himself as Tobias again and he conquers this fear. Tobias believes he’s afraid of the lingering shadow of Marcus. His father’s shadow always follows him.

Fourthly, Tris appears to Tobias. She is injured, bloody, and dying. He tries his hardest to get to her, but he is too late. She dies and the fear landscape comes to a gloomy end.

The scene transitions to Tobias making his way to Caleb’s jail cell. He’s stopped by a guard, but allowed to proceed by Therese. An old woman, Drea, opens Caleb’s jail cell for Tobias when he tells her that he’s following his mother’s orders.

Tobias makes his way to Caleb’s cell. He tells him that he’s going to be killed tonight and must come with him. Tobias takes Caleb out a back door where Zeke awaits. He gives Tobias a gun and they say goodbye. Zeke is staying in the city to help the wheelchair-bound Shauna.

As they walk off, Caleb tries to make conversation. Tobias doesn’t feel much like talking considering what Caleb did to Tris.

They make their way to a train platform. Tobias reflects upon how significant and magical the trains once were to him. They brought him a freedom he never had as an Abnegation.

The two hop aboard a train where they are greeted by Tris. Caleb is still under the impression that he’s going to be killed, so he thinks his sister is there to watch. Tris convinces him otherwise and lets him in on their plan. Caleb becomes quietly mindful as he processes what just happened to him. Even though he stabbed his sister in the back, she has managed to find a way to save him.

Tobias is aware that somebody spied on them as they made their way to the train. Tris shrugs it off as nothing.

The two watch the city as they head off in the train. Tobias confesses that he got his nickname, “Four,” from his own initiate trainer, Amar. Amar was supposedly killed when he was discovered to be Divergent. Tobias is comforted to know that he’s leaving this and everything behind as they exit the city.
