CHAPTER 25: TOBIAS
Nita had planned to show Tobias proof of how messed up their government was. Tobias shows up as planned, but he’s brought Tris along for the ride. Nita is surprised to see Tris, but she allows her to come along.
Nita brings them into the lab where they meet up with another GD named Reggie. Reggie displays ancient pictures of human suffering via a long slideshow. The pictures are from a history that their government keeps hidden from the public. Nita says that the government hides the fact that before the GDs existed, GPs fought each other in wars.
Tris is still hesitant in trusting Nita. She says that the government might be hiding this information with the intent of making the world a better place.
Nita, then, reveals a bombshell of information. She says that the government is promoting death and suffering. For example, it was the Bureau that gave Jeanine the serum that was able to control the minds of innocent Dauntless.
Nita and Reggie further show proof by showing Tris and Tobias an actual vial of the simulation serum.
Furthermore, they have acquired a computer password that allows them to analyze the serum. The analysis clearly identifies the liquid as the evil “Erudite” simulation serum.
Nita explains that the Chicago experiment was being threatened by the Abnegation. They were about to fulfill their “purpose” as described in the video. So, the Bureau worked with Jeanine to put a stop to everything.
Tobias can’t believe what he’s hearing. He knows that the Abnegation were a good group of people and they didn’t deserve their deaths, especially for the sake of an experiment. Tris is growing visibly angry at this new truth.
To make matters more complicated, Nita reveals the plan for Chicago. If necessary, the Bureau will use memory serum to reset everybody’s minds and start the faction experiment over from the very beginning. If things get too crazy then this is the ultimate solution.
Nita and the rebellious group of fringe GDs have a plan in the making. They’re going to infiltrate the area where the memory serum is held and steal it. Tobias and Tris believe this plan won’t even dent the Bureau.
Tris knows that Nita has a greater plan in mind, but Nita won’t open up on what it is. Tris has her suspicions about Nita’s hidden agenda. Something tells her not to trust Nita.
On the other hand, Tobias is all for joining Nita’s mini-uprising. He believes Nita is telling the truth and he thinks that Tris’ judgment is being hindered by her jealousy towards Nita.
