CHAPTER 29: TOBIAS
Tobias is with two other rebels, Mary and Rafi. They are being looked over by guards. There is a backup plan in play now since they were caught. Reggie tells Tobias that Nita and her crew are taking full responsibility for their actions.
Tobias feels remorse now and guilt for not listening to Tris. He now realizes that Nita was after more than just memory serum.
Suddenly, Tris appears. She wants to sneak in to speak to Tobias. She comes with a false pretense of bringing the guards news about David. She says that David will be okay after some recovery time. Knowing that Tris is the one that saved David, the guards are a little lenient and they let her have a word with Tobias.
Tris informs Tobias of Nita’s true intentions, as well as Uriah’s grim condition. Guilt pours over Tobias. To add insult to injury, Tris describes her distaste for Tobias’ actions. He went along with Nita’s plan, despite Tris’ warning.
Before long, Tobias is telling his story to an interrogator. Angela, David’s second-in-command, is questioning him. She believes Tobias’ story and sentences him to parole. Angela also reveals that Nita is going to be given life in prison.
Tobias begins to sob as he reflects upon his actions.
