CHAPTER 18: TOBIAS

Tobias wakes up in the morning and sees an elated Tris sitting there. Tris tells Tobias about her morning and her mother’s files. She has mixed feelings about looking into them. Tris hopes to look through the files before Caleb can.

Next, Tris asks Tobias about going to the lab later for experiments. Tobias sees it as an excuse to not watch his father’s trial. It’s his way out. He agrees to go with Tris.

The group is having breakfast when they are visited by George Wu. George asks about his sister, Tori. Tris is the one to break the news to him. George has a very emotionally distraught reaction. Luckily, his friend Amar enters the room right after to comfort him.

A little while later, Tris and Tobias find themselves going with Matthew to the lab. Matthew describes the array of experiments occurring at the Bureau. The thing that catches Tobias’ ear is the fact that Matthew refers to the Abnegation memory serum as a weapon. He goes into further detail by describing how it can stop rebellions by erasing people’s memories. He even speaks of a place called “the fringe.” Apparently, the security around the Bureau and the memory serum has helped stop attacks from the fringe.

In the lab, they are introduced to a helper, Juanita. Juanita, Nita for short, can relate to the situation that Tobias and Tris are in since she came from the failed Indianapolis experiment city.

Tris and Tobias are injected with a gene-reading serum. It contains microcomputers that connect with genetic trackers. The microcomputers then display a person’s genetic information on a computer. Matthew says that the genetic trackers tell them if they’re pure or not.

Apparently, awareness during the aptitude tests can also prove that a person is pure, but this isn’t always the case. Sometimes people with genetic flaws can appear to be Divergent even if they’re not; Matthew wants to see if Tobias is such a person.

Matthew leaves for breakfast and Nita stays to talk to them. Nita tells them about the work-system at the Bureau. People start in low positions and then gain promotions to better positions. She also describes Indianapolis. The Bureau intervened in her city when rebels set a bomb off and killed countless people.

Matthew comes back and he begins to pour over Tris’ data. She is indeed Divergent. Tobias, on the other hand, isn’t Divergent. Matthew says that his genes are an anomaly which allowed him to control simulations, but he still is damaged.

Tobias is shocked to hear that he isn’t Divergent. Tris tries to comfort him by saying that he’s always been the same person no matter what. Tobias is still upset and wants to be alone. Nita catches up with him and tells him to come back later so they can talk.
