  ALLEGIANT -- CHARACTERS
Beatrice (Tris) Prior.
Beatrice is the protagonist of the novel. She grew up in the Abnegation faction before joining the Dauntless. While training as a Dauntless she learns early on that she is a Divergent. This means she has the characteristics of people from multiple factions. Her powerful Divergence, as well as her origins, propels her on an important journey. Her Divergence grants her the power to resist serums and to think differently than others. In fact, she oftentimes has the right hunches about people and things. Her cunning, bravery, and skills help to change the her world for the better.

Tobias (Four) Eaton.
Tobias, like Tris, originally came from Abnegation. From there, he joined the Dauntless. He excelled as Dauntless, supposedly because of his Divergence. In Allegiant it’s revealed that he isn’t a Divergent, but he has a genetic flaw that makes him appear as if he’s Divergent. Regardless, his personality and attributes make him the perfect match for Tris. Additionally, he is in an interesting position since his mother is in charge of the factionless, whereas his father eventually helps to lead the Allegiants. In Allegiant, Tobias must face much guilt that is a result of his own actions. He also learns to put much faith in a mother that was never really there for him.

Evelyn Eaton.
Evelyn is Tobias’ mother. Originally, Tris thought that Evelyn had passed away. However, Tris learns that Evelyn cheated on Marcus. As a result of her affair, Evelyn was forced to leave the Abnegation and join the factionless. Her “death” was no more than a cover-up. As a member of the factionless, Evelyn became their leader. As the factionless leader, Evelyn takes on important roles in both Insurgent and Allegiant. In Insurgent, Evelyn and her factionless become allies with both the Dauntless and the Abnegation. Together, they bring down the Erudites. In Allegiant, the factionless gain control of Chicago and Evelyn takes the helm as everyone’s leader. She hopes to create a society without factions.

Caleb Prior.
Caleb is Beatrice’s brother. In Divergent, during the Choosing Ceremony, he was expected to stay with the Abnegation, but he surprisingly chose to become Erudite. In Insurgent, after the Erudite attack, Caleb joins his sister for a while. Later, unfortunately, he returns to the Erudites and tells Jeanine much about his Divergent sister, Tris. In Allegiant, the factionless put him on trial for supporting the Erudite. He’s found guilty and sentenced to an execution. Luckily, he is able to escape and join forces with his sister again.

Peter.
Peter originally came from Candor. In Divergent he demonstrates a short fuse as he goes through the Dauntless initiation process with Tris and her friends. In Insurgent the complexity of his character is revealed. At times, he acts like a traitor while other times he goes as far as saving Tris. In Allegiant he doesn’t take a lead role, but his character does prove intriguing with his continuing evolution. He reveals his struggles with his own dark side. Likewise, he reveals guilt for some of the choices he has made. His personal demons influence him to take drastic measures to change himself for the better.

Natalie Prior.
Natalie is the mother of both Tris and Caleb. Tris knows little about her mother’s history until Allegiant. At the Bureau, Tris learns just about everything about Natalie’s beginnings. Natalie has a complicated history that began outside of Chicago. She lived a difficult childhood with her parents in Milwaukee. One day, after her mother shot her father dead, Natalie moved away to the fringe. There, she accidently killed a man who was attacking children. Soon after, she was picked up by David and taken to the Bureau. At the Bureau, she is tasked with going into the experimental city of Chicago as a Dauntless. From the inside, she helped some Divergents escape to the Bureau. The plan was for her to go to the Erudites next to continue her inside-work. However, Natalie ended up meeting and falling in love with Andrew. Together, they joined the Abnegation and started a family. Tris and Caleb grew up never knowing this backstory about their mother.

Juanita (Nita).
Nita is a lab technician who originally came to the Bureau from the failed Indianapolis experiment. Indianapolis was once a lot like Chicago, but the experiment was called off when things started going sour. Many genetically damaged people like Nita were relocated to the Bureau to live and work. Although she appears obedient and harmless, she is opposed to the Bureau’s ways. She helps to lead a rebellion against the Bureau.

Matthew.
Matthew is a genetically pure lab technician and scientist. He sides with Nita and initially helps her a bit with her rebellion against the Bureau. Later, he helps Tris and her friends against the Bureau. He proves to be a valuable inside-man and friend to those opposed to David’s plans. Matthew eventually reveals his motives for helping Nita and Tris. Matthew once had a forbidden romance with a genetically damaged woman. He fell in love with her and she opened his eyes to how normal the genetically damaged actually were. Eventually, she was beat up for being genetically damaged. Her injuries from the assault led to her death. This woman forever changed Matthew. He learned to sympathize with the genetically damaged and he learned to help their cause.

Cara.
Cara is an Erudite and Will’s sister. In Insurgent, when the Erudites launch a surprise attack on the Candor compound, Cara goes along with them. She, however, betrays her people and runs upstairs to warn some loyal Dauntless about the ongoing attack at the compound. The Erudite sneak attack is stopped because these loyal Dauntless are able to fight back. Cara very much saves the loyal Dauntless at the Candor headquarters. Later in Allegiant, Cara takes on a more central role as one of the leaders of the Allegiant. She leads a group of Allegiant, including Tris, out of Chicago.

Christina.
In Divergent, Christina meets Beatrice when they both work to become Dauntless members during the initiation period. She is originally Candor. Beatrice develops a close friendship with her. In Insurgent their friendship is tested when Christina learns that Tris killed Will. It takes her a long while before she warms up to Tris again. In Allegiant, Christina proves to be an amazing friend not only to Tris but to Tobias as well.

Uriah.
Uriah is a Dauntless member who has known Tris since her initiation in Divergent. In Insurgent during an attack by Dauntless traitors at the Candor headquarters, Tris learns that Uriah is also Divergent. Throughout Insurgent, Uriah has a romantic relationship with Marlene but she’s eventually killed. In Allegiant, Uriah joins the group of Allegiants who want to venture out of Chicago. Unfortunately, during an uprising at the Bureau’s compound, Uriah is gravely injured.

David.
David is in charge of The Bureau of Genetic Warfare that is housed in what once was O’Hare Airport. He is the one who is set on keeping the Chicago experiment going in hopes of slowly creating a society that consists of more and more genetically pure people. David has a connection to Tris through Tris’ mother, Natalie. David saved Natalie from the fringe when she was younger. Natalie, then, came to work for the Bureau. As a Bureau agent, Natalie was to go into Chicago to help Divergents escape. David had feelings for Natalie; but, to his dismay, she fell in love with Tris’ father, Andrew.

Amar.
Amar is the Dauntless who trained Tobias and gave him his nickname, “Four.” It was assumed that Amar was killed when he was discovered to be Divergent. In reality, Amar’s “death” was staged to spare him from being killed for being Divergent. The Bureau intervened and relocated him to their headquarters just outside of Chicago. At the Bureau he ran patrols. He proves to be a valuable ally for Tris and her friends once they venture outside of Chicago. He works closely with his boyfriend, George Wu.

Johanna Reyes.
If the Amity had a true leader, then it would have been Johanna. The Amity live by the rules of a true democracy where all people have an equal say, so Johanna simply had the title of speaker for the Amity. In Insurgen,t when Tris unveils the plan to attack the Erudites, Johanna leaves her position as speaker so that she can lead a group of Amity in an attempt to stop the conflict. In Allegiant, Johanna continues a leadership role. She helps lead the Allegiant with Cara. Johanna takes control of the Allegiants within Chicago, while Cara leads another group of Allegiants beyond the fence.

Tori Wu.
Tori is a member of the Dauntless who aids Beatrice several times in Divergent. She first helps her when she gives Beatrice the aptitude test which determined which faction Beatrice would be best suited for. The aptitude test revealed that Beatrice was Divergent. Tori was kind and wise enough to know what Divergence means, so she hid the real results from those in charge. Also, in Divergent Beatrice visits Tori at the tattoo shop for tattoos and for answers behind the secrets of Divergence. Tori reveals that her brother, George, was a Divergent who was killed for being different. In Insurgent Tori takes a more crucial role. She pretends she is a Dauntless traitor so she can spy on the Erudite. Later, she is one of three people who are chosen to become the new Dauntless leaders. As leader, she plans to carry out an attack on the Erudites with the help of some Abnegation and the factionless. In Allegiant, after the factionless are in control, Tori joins the Allegiants. She decides to escape with some of the Allegiants out of Chicago’s borders. Unfortunately, she is shot dead by the factionless during the attempted escape.

Zeke.
Zeke is a Dauntless member, Uriah’s older brother, and a friend of Tobias. He has the opportunity to leave Chicago with a group of Allegiants. However, he decides to stay in Chicago to care for Shauna. He appears later in the book when he is delivered some bad news about Uriah.

Marcus Eaton.
Marcus is a former Abnegation council member and Tobias’ father. He was a terrible father and Tobias still carries much baggage because of him. In Allegiant, he is put to trial by the factionless for his crimes against them. They find him guilty and he is banished from the city. Instead of following through with the banishment, he joins the Allegiants.

George Wu.
George is Tori’s brother. He transferred to Dauntless with his sister from the Erudites. He was soon after discovered to be Divergent. Upon the discovery of his Divergence, it was assumed that he was killed. In reality, his death was faked and he was snuck out of Chicago by the Bureau. The Bureau wanted to save his life, since he was genetically pure. Had he stayed in Chicago he would have been most likely killed by Jeanine’s henchmen. In Allegiance, George resurfaces as a Bureau worker. He works with Amar on patrols. George and Amar are love interests.

Andrew Prior.
Andrew is Beatrice’s father. In Divergent he helped run the government as a member of the Abnegation council. Towards the end of Divergent he sacrificed himself to save Tris and to help stop the Erudites. While he is deceased and not present beyond Divergent, he serves as a motivating factor for Tris. In Allegiant it’s revealed that Natalie, Andrew’s wife, was a Bureau agent who was tasked to help Divergents escape from Chicago. Natalie gave up on this task when she fell in love with and married Andrew. The fact that Natalie gave up everything for Andrew is a testament to how good of a person he was.

Will.
Like Natalie Prior and Andrew Prior, Will died in Divergent, but his death nevertheless impacts Tris in Insurgent and Allegiant. In Divergent Will worked alongside Beatrice as they went through the Dauntless initiation. He originally was from the Erudite faction. He was an overall good guy who developed a relationship with Christina. In Divergent when the Erudite took over the Dauntless soldiers, Will nearly killed Tris with a gun. He too had been turned into a zombie soldier by the Erudite. Tris, though, shot first and killed Will dead before he could shoot her. In Insurgent when the truth of Will’s death is revealed, a few of Tris’ friendships are greatly impacted. In Allegiant, though, Christina has forgiven Tris for what she did to Will. Cara, Will’s sister, also has learned to forgive her.

Edward.
In Divergent Edward was a Dauntless initiate who was forced out of the initiation process by Peter. As a result of an eye injury that Peter gave him, Edward was forced to become factionless. In Insurgent Edward helps Evelyn, the factionless leader. He continues his role as an assistant to Evelyn in Allegiant. Unfortunately, during a demonstration against the factions, Edward is unexpectedly shot and killed.
Marlene.
Marlene is a Dauntless member who Tris first meets during the Dauntless initiation in Divergent. In Insurgent, Marlene is subjected to an Erudite serum. The serum allows Jeanine to control Marlene’s actions. Also in Insurgent, while being controlled by Jeanine, Marlene is forced to jump off of the top of Dauntless headquarters. She passes away. She is only briefly mentioned in Allegiant.

Lynn.
Lynn is a Dauntless member who also meets Tris during Dauntless initiation. In Insurgent Tris is reacquainted with Lynn at the Candor headquarters. Later in Insurgent, when the Erudite compound is attacked by the Dauntless, Abnegation, and factionless, Lynn participates on the raid. She, unfortunately, doesn’t come out alive. Lynn is only briefly mentioned in Allegiant.

Shauna.
Shauna is a Dauntless who is Lynn’s older sister. She doesn’t play a big role in Allegiant. Unfortunately in Insurgent, when Candor’s leader Jack Chang meets with a Erudite’s representative, Max, Shauna is shot during a brief skirmish. The shot leaves Shauna paralyzed. Shauna appears later in Allegiant with brand new leg braces.
