CHAPTER 14: TOBIAS
The group is now in the back of the truck. Tobias describes it as if it’s a military cargo truck with a tarp covering the bed.
Tris and Christina are speculating over the picture of Tris’ mother that Zoe gave her. Tobias hopes that Tris doesn’t think her mom is still alive. It’s unlikely.
As the truck moves along, Tobias peers outside at their new surroundings. They pass buildings similar to the ones he is accustomed to. Many of them are old and in ruins. He has difficulty processing what is happening to them now, but Tris is there to comfort him. He closes his eyes until Tris tells him to open them.
They reach their destination. It’s a heavily guarded, fenced area. A sign reads “The Bureau of Genetic Welfare”. As they enter it, they see an array of different compounds and buildings. Zoe later describes that it once was O’Hare Airport, but the United States government converted it to the Bureau.
The group is confused by all of these new words. Zoe goes into further detail on what an airport is. Tris becomes amazed at the thought of flying. Zoe goes onto describe how the airport is used. It’s where they watch over the city.
Zoe begins to walk them over to the control room. As they make their way, Tobias feels uneasy about all this new baffling information and sights that they see. Tris, on the other hand, seems excited and interested in everything.
Tobias has a mentally challenging time going through the airport’s security screening system. It triggers his fear of confined spaces. He is able to make it through and Tris is there to comfort him afterwards.
The group continues being led through the airport. They’re taken to the control center. There, Tobias sees countless computer screens that many people are looking at and working around.
David approaches them and introduces himself.
