CHAPTER 6: TOBIAS
Tobias feels like something is about to go down as he gets his food in the cafeteria. He listened into one of Evelyn’s conversations and he knows there’s a demonstration that is going to take place.
His breakfast is interrupted when people begin to gather outside. They shout “Death to the factions” as they gather around Edward. He is destroying the Choosing Ceremony’s symbolic bowls with a sledgehammer.
An Erudite comes up to Edward, grabs the sledgehammer, and tries to stop the destruction. Edward hits him with the sledgehammer, and the crowd goes crazy. The Allegiants are taking action against the anti-faction people.
Tobias is pushed toward Edward, and he tries to get Edward to stop. He sends Edward to the ground and then he runs toward Tris.
Suddenly, gunshots go off. Edward is the intended target and he gets shot straight in the stomach. The crowd runs, people are trampled, and some innocent people are accidently shot. In the frenzy, the Erudite man who started it all is killed.
Tobias sits and contemplates what just happened. All this destruction, all these lives lost, all of this because of his mother’s vision of a factionless society. Tobias and Tris know that they must eventually leave.
Back at the Erudite compound, Tobias is greeted by his concerned mother. He tells her that Edward died and she begins to grieve.
Tobias questions her, asking why there wasn’t any warning about the demonstration. She lies through her teeth, saying that she hadn’t a clue it was going to happen.
Tobias hangs around a bit to help comfort his mother. She may have known that the demonstration would happen; however, she didn’t know that Edward would die. She isn’t taking it too well.
