CHAPTER 51: TOBIAS
Evelyn plans to speak to Marcus so they can end the conflict peacefully. Tobias is left in awe of how Tris was right. Tris told him that when facing a choice, people will choose whatever is best for their loved ones.
Tobias excuses himself to go see Peter. Peter still wants to go through with a reset, so Tobias gives him the vial of memory serum. Peter chugs it down and the evil person he once was begins to disappear.
Before long, Evelyn, Tobias, and Peter make their way to Millennium Park to meet up with Marcus and Johanna. Once they’ve all met up, Evelyn attempts to negotiate. She agrees to give the Allegiants weapons if they agree on creating a new fairly elected government that will govern everybody as a whole. The faction system will no longer control anybody. Furthermore, Evelyn says that she will leave the city and step down as a leader. Likewise, as part of the deal, Marcus cannot be a part of the new government.
Marcus is not too fond of the terms that Evelyn sets. He refuses to go through with them. Johanna, on the other hand, is eager to accept the terms. She puts Marcus in his place, telling him that she leads the Allegiants, and that their people will not be happy if they don’t accept these peaceful terms. Marcus quietly goes along with the new plan.
With a plan for peace now being set in motion, Tobias decides it’s time for him to set off to find Zeke. Before leaving, he makes plans to meet up with Evelyn later. Then, he says his goodbyes to Johanna and Marcus.
Before long, Tobias is at the household of Uriah’s family. Christina and Amar are already there. Tobias explains to Uriah’s mom, Hana, and to Zeke what happened to Uriah. He also explains his role in the attack that led to Uriah’s grave injuries. Hana asks for some time to cope with the facts, however, Tobias explains that they have to leave almost immediately. He wants to get them back to the Bureau in time to say their goodbyes to Uriah before he’s taken off life support.
The group eventually heads off back to the Bureau’s headquarters. Once they get there, the first person they run into is Cara. Unfortunately, Cara has grim news. Tris died from her bullet wounds after she released the gaseous memory serum. Tobias is left in shock.
