  ALLEGIANT -- CHAPTER 5: TRIS
CHAPTER 5: TRIS

The next day, Tris meets up with Tobias in the park. He tells her that Christina and the rest of her friends were also let go by Evelyn. Tris is relieved, but her focus remains on hanging out with Tobias. She’s happy to be with him.

They decide to make their rendezvous a real date. They make their way to a stage and climb up its support beams. Tobias has come prepared with a backpack filled with a blanket and a lemonade-type drink. The couple sits and begins to talk over what happened.

Tobias begins to vent on how terrible he felt when he awoke one day only to learn Tris had volunteered herself to the Erudites. Tris admits that she thought giving up her own life in such manner would be easier than it actually was. Her martyr-type attitude helped her realize that she doesn’t want to die. Tris also confesses that she felt belittled by Tobias whenever he tried to convince her to take her life seriously.

Tobias also has the opportunity to open-up to Tris.  He makes her promise not to lie to him again. She promises and apologies for lying.

The two converse about the special drink they’re sipping on. Then, they talk about special foods that the other factions have. The Erudite have this lemonade-type drink, the Dauntless have cake, and the Abnegation don’t have anything. They ponder about what type of boring treats would be fitting for the Abnegation: old bread, oatmeal, or perhaps milk.

Next, they compare the Abnegation teachings to the Dauntless teachings. The Dauntless taught them that they have great freedom to do things. This conversation paves the way for Tris to ask Tobias about his desires. Tobias answers by kissing her. The kissing leads to intense physical canoodling between the two. Time goes by quickly as they spend this time with each other.
