CHAPTER 48: TOBIAS
Tobias and Peter have reached the old Erudite headquarters where the factionless now have set up their own base of operations. Despite a tiny bit of objection from Peter, Tobias plans to waltz right into the compound’s doors. He has faith in his mother.
The two make it inside and they are not well received. Fortunately, Grace, an old acquaintance from Tobias’ Abnegation days recognizes him. Tobias says he wants to relay a message to his mom. She runs off to see if Evelyn is up for seeing her son. Soon, Grace returns and escorts them to a meeting room.
Evelyn greets her son without much regard. Grace and Peter, who are still there, are both asked to go wait outside. Then, Tobias tells Evelyn what the Bureau has planned for Chicago. He also admits that he’s come there so he can get her to drink the memory serum.
They continue conversing and Evelyn admits that she’ll do anything to stop Marcus from restarting the factions. Tobias tells her that he’s opposed to this false sense of freedom that she’s created. He calls her a tyrant. Her people aren’t really free.
Next, Tobias tries to make a bargain with his mom. If she drops her plans to fight with the Allegiants then he will be there for her as her son, but if she chooses to fight then she will never see him again. Surprisingly, Evelyn clutches Tobias and says that she chooses him over the city.
