CHAPTER 42: TOBIAS
Tris and Tobias awaken next to each other. They feel closer to each other than ever. Although they don’t want to, they know they must get ready for a busy day.
Before long, Tobias, Tris, Caleb, and Christina gather in a training area. They plan on showing Caleb how to shoot a gun. Caleb is a terrible shot at first. Christina also fires off a shot, but she too is unsuccessful at shooting a target. Tobias, on the other hand, is able to hit the target well. By watching Tobias, Caleb is able to improve his shot.
Tris also shoots at the target. As he watches Tris, Caleb remembers how awkward she once was. He’s impressed with how much she has changed. She doesn’t look like the little sister he recalls.
The day progresses and little things that are important to the plan begin to take place. For instance, those who are going to participate in the action are inoculated from the memory serum by Matthew.
Tobias decides to take a moment to go visit Uriah. Uriah is still on life support with just a short time left before they remove the tubes from him.
While Tobias is there with Uriah, Matthew comes along. They talk about Uriah for a short while before Matthew begins talking about his own personal history. He explains why he’s so interested in rebelling against the Bureau.
Apparently, Matthew once had a GD love interest. Their GD-GP status prohibited them from dating, but he liked her and the thrill of being with her so they dated. One day, she was beat up simply because she was a GD. Her injuries eventually led to her death. Although she was gone, he learned a lot from his time with her. She taught him how normal and good GD’s actually are. Now, he works against the Bureau because the experience opened his eyes to what these people really are.
During his time with his GD girlfriend, Matthew also had also fallen in love with her. His actions against the Bureau may also fulfill a personal vendetta he has against them.
