CHAPTER 1: TRIS
Tris is stunned to learn that she is potentially related to a woman that they all viewed in a video recording. The video told the factions of the truth behind their existence. The woman in the video, Edith Prior, described how moral decay caused humanity to try something new. Generations ago, some do-gooders created the city of Chicago and they established the faction system. The city and the factions were populated by people who chose to have their memories erased and replaced with new, false memories. This memory-wash helped to start the faction system that they now live in.
Also in the video, Edith instructed the Abnegation to seek the help of other factions when Divergents began really popping up. This would be the sign that the factions are ready to leave the city, go beyond the fence, and rejoin the rest of humanity. The people who left the city would be tasked with bringing a fresh start to the rest of humanity.
Tris, like everyone, is shaken up with the knowledge that the video revealed. Their existence was fabricated around a social experiment that could potentially help the human race. To make matters more interesting is the fact that one of Tris’ presumed ancestors, Edith Prior, helped to set this plan in motion.
Tris, Christina, and Cara now reside in an Erudite prison cell where Evelyn put them. Evelyn, the factionless’ leader, took control of the factions once the Erudites were defeated. The girls are clueless as to what Evelyn and the factionless are now doing with their new-found power and with the information that was revealed.
Tris has faith in Tobias coming around to help her.
