CHAPTER 3: TRIS
Tris is under trial with truth-serum in her system. Evelyn has deemed her a traitor since she worked with Marcus and since she tried to save Jeanine. Evelyn questions Tris’ motives.
Despite the truth serum, Tris is able to effortlessly lie. She says that she couldn’t fight as a soldier since she was shell-shocked after killing Will. Still wanting to help the Dauntless-cause, she sided with Marcus who she assumed was working with Dauntless knowledge. Unable to hold her tongue, Tris says that she is owed a debt of gratitude for her actions since she helped to reveal their origins.
Evelyn comes in close to Tris and she privately tells Tris that she knew the secret all along. Then, Evelyn decrees that Tris is innocent. She says that Tris’ innocence was revealed by the truth serum. In reality, Evelyn believes that Tris lied, but there’s no way to prove it.
Uriah helps Tris to her new room at the Erudite headquarters. There she’ll be lodging with Christina, Cara, Uriah, and four other women. Uriah expects that Christina and Cara will be set free soon.
Tris asks how Uriah is holding up after losing Lynn and Marlene. He politely says it’s not a topic that he wants to dwell on. Then, he tells Tris that she’s to meet with Tobias at Millenium Park later that night.
