CHAPTER 2: TOBIAS
Tobias is still haunted by his memories of being held prisoner in the Erudite compound. Now, though, he moves freely about the factionless controlled Erudite building. He easily makes it down to Tris’ prison cell where she is very happy to see him.
Tobias tells everybody that Evelyn hopes to keep everyone in the city where they can live away from those outside the fence. Evelyn and her many supporters don’t like the fact that they are expected to help others outside of the fence; Evelyn and her supporters believe they really need to only help themselves. Christina believes Evelyn’s argument is sound since they have a lot to fix after what they’ve all just been through.
Tobias has to quickly end his conversation with them. He doesn’t want to take too long and lose his mom’s trust. He told her he was coming to the cell to break-up with Tris. In reality though, Tobias has come to warn the group of their upcoming trial. Evelyn isn’t too happy with the truth that was revealed and she’s going to try to place the blame on Tris and her companions. Evelyn would rather be in control and still have the truth remain a secret.
Tobias already has a plan set. He wants Tris to volunteer to be questioned first during the trial. He tells her that she needs to use her Divergent magic to lie when she is under the truth-serum’s control. Her lie has to be good enough to convince everybody that she and her companions aren’t traitors. That way, her other friends won’t have to testify.
