  ALLEGIANT -- CHAPTER 55
CHAPTER 55
Tobias reveals that those impacted by the memory serum have been given new memories. They’ve been led to believe that an accident led to their memories being erased. Furthermore, they’ve been led to believe that the genetically damaged and the genetically pure are all equals. In fact, they are told that before the memory-erasing accident they were planning on coaxing the government to believe in this equality.

Tobias tries to keep himself busy at the compound in order to distract himself from the pain of losing Tris. He still, though, has moments of extreme sadness.

He also reveals that people from Chicago have been given the option to come to the Bureau to learn about the experiment. From there, there’s no telling what will happen to the Chicagoans.

The scene turns to a gathering around the Bureau’s giant stone sculpture. It’s basically a big stone with a tank of water above it. Drip by drop, the tank releases the water on the slab of stone. It once stood for the slow progress the Bureau was making against the genetically damaged. Reggie uses a valve to release all of the water from the tank.

As Tobias watches, he’s greeted by Caleb. Tris had a hunch she might not make it out alive and she left Caleb with a few parting words to pass onto Tobias. Caleb relays the message to him: she wanted Tobias to know that she didn’t want to leave him.

Upon hearing her last words, Tobias lashes out at Caleb for not following through with the initial plan. He wished it was Caleb who had died instead of Tris. Tobias walks off.

Tobias makes it to the lobby where he sits in sadness. He sees Cara in the near-distance describing the symbolic significance of the rock-slab sculpture to Peter. Then, Peter leaves and Cara comes to join Tobias. She sits with him to comfort him.

Christina comes along and tells them that they’re about to remove life-support from Uriah. They all go to be there during Uriah’s final moments. Evelyn is also there to help support Tobias. She left Chicago as part of her negotiations with Marcus and Johanna.

From a window, the group watches as Hana and Zeke stand besides Uriah. David is also there to give the final orders to remove life-support. David is a blank slate now, but Tobias still sees him as Tris’ murderer. When David leaves the room, Tobias tries to attack him but he’s held back by Evelyn.

Soon enough, the life-support machines are turned off. Uriah passes away and Tobias runs off in pain.
