  ALLEGIANT -- CHAPTER 22: TRIS
CHAPTER 22: TRIS

Tris continues to read her mother’s journal. In it, she now is reading letters that Natalie sent to David. Natalie defends her marriage and her excursion into the Abnegation faction. David isn’t too pleased with such choices. Natalie suggests that David had a crush on her. David might have been upset with Natalie because she found Andrew. David probably was just jealous.

When her mother’s journals come to an end, Tris seeks out Zoe so she can learn more about her mother. As she waits for Zoe in the control room, Tris watches Evelyn on a screen. Evelyn is alone with a sculpture in her hands that she had originally gifted to Tobias.

Finally, Zoe comes to talk to Tris. As the two walk, Zoe gives some more backstory to Natalie’s relationship with Andrew. Natalie became a psychology class tutor for Andrew and the two fell in love. Andrew decided to leave the Erudites when he learned of unethical serum experiments that Jeanine was doing on people. So, when the Choosing Ceremony came around they both agreed on Abnegation.

Zoe adds that Abnegation was a good choice for her. It had its bad leaders, like Marcus, but overall it was a good fit. She says that Marcus, although Divergent, was bad because of the birds he flocked with. Tris wonders if this is true.

Zoe walks with Tris over to Matthew’s lab where she delivers a brief message to him and then leaves. Tris is left to talk to Matthew about her perceptions of the Erudite. Matthew tries to convince Tris that the Erudites aren’t so bad. He wants her to begin looking at the Erudites in a more favorable light. He even gives her a human biology textbook to get her wheels turning a bit.

When Tris gets back to the hotel, she finds Caleb there. She finally decides to give him the electronic journal so that he too can read about their mother.

Then, Caleb takes Tris out to the Bureau’s old record room where he’s found information about Edith Prior. He found documentation to show that Edith, originally Amanda Marie Ritter, volunteered to join the Bureau’s experiment many generations ago. He also tells Tris that Edith was their ancient aunt who joined the Erudites.

Caleb seems excited at the fact that many of the Priors chose to be Erudites. Tris believes Caleb is trying to justify his Erudite allegiance. Caleb’s ancestors were true and faithful to the Erudite cause, just as he was. No matter his reasoning, Tris knows that Caleb should have helped her when she was in trouble. She is angered by her brother’s ideas and she leaves.

She finds Tobias and he comforts her. She finds great comfort in his presence and his physical affection.
