  ALLEGIANT -- CHAPTER 23: TOBIAS
CHAPTER 23: TOBIAS

Before slumbering off to sleep, Tobias finds a note from Nita. She asks to meet up with him. He considers waking up Tris to tell her about it, but he just goes off to find her.

Once they meet up, Nita takes him to a room that contains a wall of Chicago family trees. One interesting thing that Nita discloses is how Jeanine somehow knew that Tris’ family originated from the Bureau. Somehow Jeanine knew Tris’ true origin.

Tobias looks around and finds his family tree. It’s pretty simple with his grandmother listed, his mother, his father, and then him. Next to their names are the first letters of the factions they’ve been a part of. For example, Tobias has an “AD” next to his name which stands for “Abnegation” and “Dauntless.”

After describing the family tree, Nita gets down to business and reveals her secret. She isn’t happy with being called “damaged” and she now knows that Tobias isn’t either. She says that the Bureau have killed and done inhumane things to the GDs. She wants to go outside the Bureau’s walls with Tobias to show him what she means. They’re going to venture to “the fringe.” There, he’ll learn new things about the Bureau.

He has to keep their excursion a secret, though. He doesn’t like the idea of keeping secrets from Tris; however, he doesn’t want her to get in trouble for knowing things that he’s about to find out.

Nita escorts Tobias to a secret escape route, deep underground. They make their way outside the compound to an empty truck that awaits them. Nita describes that there are people waiting for them.

They finally arrive at their destination, the fringe. Before they exit the safety of the truck, Nita has Tobias grab a few knives from the glove compartment. They’re for protection if necessary. The two, then, head off into an alley.

As they walk, Nita describes how some GDs want to live in the fringe because life is hard within government-controlled cities. GDs are discriminated against. Life isn’t much easier in the fringe, though.

They make their way to a building where they meet up with a man named Rafi and a woman named Mary. Tobias learns that these two lead the GD rebel group in the Midwest. Apparently, there are four of these rebel groups, one for each part of the country.

Tobias is asked to wait outside while Nita speaks to Rafi and Mary. While outside, he speaks to a guard who protects the room. Tobias learns that the laws within the city are biased and favor the GPs.

Before long, Tobias and Nita are on their way back. As they drive, Nita goes describes the larger cities. They are short on resources, they have a lackluster police force, and GDs are the scapegoats for everything. She says that life in the Bureau is only a bit better than the cities.

Next, Nita finally spills the beans on her viewpoint. She lets Tobias know that even before the genetic damaged existed, before the Purity Wars, life was filled with other wars and violence. The government is focusing on purity when there’s so much other stuff they should be trying to make better. Nita believes the government created a whole propaganda campaign to make people see things in a certain light. She doesn’t see a problem with GDs in the first place, yet everybody is convinced to believe in these class issues.

Once they reach the compound, they are able to sneak back in. Tobias finds that Tris is still sleeping. He contemplates on whether or not he should tell her the truth.
