CHAPTER 21: TRIS
Tobias and Tris eat breakfast together. Tobias isn’t in much of a chatty mood. Tris is surprised that Marcus’ banishment has made Tobias upset. When the subject of Marcus is brought up during their conversation, Tobias gets up to leave. His exit is interrupted, though, by an attack drill. The drill forces the two to go their own separate ways for now.
As the drill’s alarms go off, Tris begins to recount more of what she read about her mother. Natalie’s purpose was to go into the city to help some of the Divergents to survive. She started as Dauntless to help there, and then she was to go to the Erudite. Tris wonders why her mom broke her plans and went to the Abnegation instead of the Erudite. Her journal also exposes the fact that the Bureau could mess with the city’s computers and aptitude tests from their location.
When the practice drill stops Tris and Tobias kiss and make up. Then, Tris returns to reading Natalie’s journal.
Tris learns that Natalie joined the Abnegation because she simply had fallen in love. She wanted to remain with Andrew, Tris’ father. Tris loves the fact that her mother and father had such high esteem for each other. Natalie loved Andrew so much that she turned her back to the Bureau.
