  ALLEGIANT -- CHAPTER 39: TRIS
CHAPTER 39: TRIS
Tris and the others participating in the coup against David and the Bureau go to Matthew to learn how the memory serum works. Matthew explains that the serum erases a person’s history, but doesn’t erase memory basics like how to walk and talk. If anything important does go missing in a person’s head, they can be immediately retaught it.

Next, the group has to figure out how to get into the Weapons Lab to steal the serum. They decide to ask Nita for suggestions. She has breaking and entering know-how.

As they leave, Tobias once again questions Tris’ plan. He doesn’t seem them as being any better than the Bureau since they both plan to do the same thing. Both plans require resetting people’s minds. Tris explains that their plan is the lesser of two evils.

Unexpectedly, Christina and Peter rush into the scene. Christina has terrible news. Uriah has finally been pronounced brain dead and life-support is going to be removed in a couple of days. They’ve been given the chance to go into Chicago to let Uriah’s brother, Zeke, and his mom know of his condition.

Tris wisely uses this moment to persuade Tobias to believe in her plan. She points out that when the Chicagoans lose their memories, then all of Uriah’s loved ones will forget him.

Although Tris and Tobias already know of the Bureau’s evil plan, Christina and Peter are only hearing it for the first time. Christina is stunned at what the Bureau intends to do. Peter isn’t so surprised.

Soon, some of them plan to go into the city. Apparently, there’s some kind of injection that can make people immune to the memory serum. The Bureau is going to spray the serum via airplane onto the city. Tobias, Christina, and Peter plan to sneak into Chicago. Once inside, they’ll make certain people, like Uriah’s family, immune to the reset. If the airplanes launch the reset successfully, then at least some people will remember everything.

Soon after, Tris goes to see Uriah with Christina. The two friends have a small emotional talk about their losses.

Before long, Tris leaves to see Nita. Nita is still under lock and key for her crimes. Tris hopes that Nita will be able to provide some insight about breaking into the Weapons Lab. Tris will need some inside-help if her plan to reset the Bureau is to be successful.

Tris is able to schmooze her way into see Nita. After Tris briefly explains the plan, Nita begins to give Tris some information. She warns Tris about blowing their way into the Weapons lab since an air-borne death serum will be released if they do so. They need to get David to open the doors somehow with a code.

Tris knows that there’s no way that David will reveal the code. So, she asks Nita how to blow up the doors to the Weapons Lab. Somebody will have to face the death-serum and enter lab. It will be a suicidal mission, but their only true option. Nita advises Tris to go to Reggie for explosives.
