  ALLEGIANT -- CHAPTER 15: TRIS
CHAPTER 15: TRIS

Tris recognizes David as one of the people in the picture that Zoe gave to her.

David begins to talk and he says that the time for secrets is over. Edith didn’t state the whole truth in the video and now he’s going to disclose everything to them. He calls the city an experiment.

David recalls how at one point the U.S. government chose to edit certain peoples’ genes to help create more perfect citizens. This led to a large population of off-balanced people (e.g. people were bred to be smart, but then they lost their moral sense). Eventually, these people who were “off” joined forces. They formed an army to combat the government and all normal people. The Purity War thus began and countless lives were lost.

When the war was over, they needed to come up with a way to fix those who were altered by genetic tests. The Bureau learned through trial and error that the best way to fix the mistake was to not only alter genes but to also manipulate their environments. So, a few cities were created with factions where eventually people would be born with healed genetic dispositions. These people, Divergents, were to come out of the city to help repopulate the world with healed genes.

David then describes how Jeanine’s actions were unexpected. Her actions altered how well things were going in the city.

Caleb is trying to process everything. He puts a personal twist on David’s description and he begins to better comprehend himself. His genes made him smart; however, his smarts led to his genetic tendency to be uncompassionate towards others.

Tris and her friends stand stunned and silent at all this new information. Tris, eventually, asks how they watched all of them. Zoe has the blank computer screens turned on. The screens show live video footage from the Dauntless controlled cameras that watch over the whole city.

David leads them to where they’ll stay. It’s an old hall that once belonged to a hotel.

As David leaves them, Tris follows him outside to ask him how he knew her mother. They were both in the picture that Zoe gave to Tris. David says that Natalie worked for the Bureau. She entered the city to fix something. Apparently, she stuck around.

Tris is shocked at the fact that David and his team did nothing for Natalie when she was in trouble. They were watching everything, but they did not take action. Tris becomes visibly upset and leaves.

Tris returns to her friends. They are in a complete sense of shock and disbelief. Tris talks to Cara. She feels like her Erudite identity was just stripped away from her.

Tris walks on over to Tobias. Tobias is upset about how meaningless his life was back in the city. They were nothing but an experiment. Tobias worked at the Dauntless control center and he grew accustomed to watching everything via their video cameras, so he doesn’t care that the Bureau was watching them. He does care, though, that his whole life now feels like it was a sham.

Tobias, then, hints at the fact that the Bureau must have seen the two of them getting cozy with each other. At the thought of this, he begins to get physically affectionate with Tris.

Tris, then, begins to wonder how accurate their religious beliefs were. She wonders how many more lies they based their whole lives around.

Fortunately, Tris finds comfort in her friends. She especially finds comfort in her love for Tobias. At least she knows the feelings they share for each other are real.
