CHAPTER 32: TRIS
Tris is being led by Zoe to go see David. She isn’t sure why he wants to see her and she’s slightly nervous. Zoe asks Tris not to make a big deal out of the wheelchair that David is in since he wouldn’t like it.
Eventually, Tris makes her way into his office. She reflects on how this charismatic, nice individual did so much harm to her people within the city walls. As they speak to each other, Tris thinks about how David is the enemy. She needs to keep him close to her. She needs to remain in his good favor and work against him from the inside. That way, she’ll be able to avenge the lost lives of her parents and the other people David played a role in killing.
David gets to his reasoning for inviting Tris to come see him. He offers Tris a future role in an advisory council. The council helps David make decisions. Tris will have to work under the wings of another council member until she’s of age to join the council herself.
David then describes his background. As a kid, his bad parents were put into jail and he ran to the fringe. There, he was lucky to have survived the bad living conditions.
Before leaving, David says that he admires Tris for being willing to sacrifice his life for the lives of others. Tris was, in fact, trying to save her own life but David doesn’t know that.
Before she makes her exit, Tris learns that they were incredibly close to death by the hands of Nita and her people. Had they blown up the Weapons Lab, the air-borne death gas would have been released and it would have killed them all. The gas is a fail-safe in case anybody tries to break in without proper clearance. Nita must have been fearful of this type of death and she didn’t take this suicidal route. She, instead, chose to be captured. The death serum must be a scary weapon.
