  ALLEGIANT -- CHAPTER 17: TRIS
CHAPTER 17: TRIS

Tris gets up early to explore the airport. She has a special security badge that lets her walk around at will. She is impressed by the brightness of the airport. She also is interested in a weird statue composed of a giant square rock with a slowly leaking tank of water above it.

Zoe finds Tris at the statue and she explains the significance of it. It stands for the Bureau. The slowly leaking water hits the “problem” rock drop by drop, signifying the slow adjustments that they’re making. Zoe explains that their problem is one that will take much time to fix.

Next, Zoe escorts Tris to a lab where David saved something that belonged to Natalie Prior. Tris is a bit of a celebrity among the folks she passes since they’ve watched her on the cameras.

As they walk, Zoe describes other experimental cities. Apparently an earlier experimental city in Indianapolis was unsuccessful and only lasted a few generations. Indianapolis didn’t have factions, so everybody was equal in social stature. Zoe says that many of the people Tris sees working at the Bureau came from Indianapolis. Zoe adds that factioned cities, such as Tris’ Chicago, have been more successful.

Zoe adds that other people who work at the Bureau have inherited their jobs. It’s like a family business, in this case a Bureau, that’s passed on from generation to generation.

They finally make it to the lab where David has a worker, Matthew, display Natalie Wright’s documents. The documents take a while to load; meanwhile, David gives a backstory on Natalie. Natalie came from one of the normal cities and was brought to the Bureau because she was genetically pure. When the old Erudite leader, Norton, began the practice of murdering Divergents they called on a sixteen year-old Natalie to go into the city to work as a spy for the Bureau. Like a double agent, she went as far as getting married to Tris’ father.

David wants Natalie’s file to do the rest of the talking for him. Natalie’s file can give Tris a better description of her mother than he can. He has her files placed on an IPad-like tablet that Tris takes with her. Matthew walks Tris back to the hotel area.

Before Matthew departs, he asks if Tris and Tobias will come by later so that he can check out their genes. Among the Divergents, the two are unique since they can mentally fight off serums. Tris is up for it.
