CHAPTER 41: TRIS
Tris and her group are contemplating on how they will access the Weapons Lab. If they blow up the doors of the lab then the person who enters will die from death serum. The gaseous serum will be released unless the code is entered at the doors. The group realizes that for this to work somebody will have to sacrifice their own life. It’s a suicide mission.
Tris realizes of all the people participating in the coup she would want her brother to sacrifice his own life. Caleb also realizes that he is the most likely candidate for the suicide mission. He is not well liked since he worked with the Erudites during the first attacks in Chicago. With tears in his eyes he agrees to do it if it will get Tris to forgive him. Tris assures him that such a deed will earn her forgiveness.
In an interior dialogue with herself, Tris questions whether or not there’s somebody better suited than Caleb to enter the Weapons Lab. She wouldn’t have any of her friends do it since they’ve been there for her. A long time ago when she lived with much guilt and regret, she herself would have done it. Eventually, she comes to the conclusion that Caleb will be the easiest loss to bear.
Tris meets up with Tobias and he comforts her about Caleb’s upcoming self-sacrifice. He says that the Abnegation look favorably upon such instances of self-sacrifice.
Tobias then thanks Tris for always believing in him. The scientists told him that his genes were damaged; however, Tris always said that he was completely normal. Tris has always supported him. Before long, Tris and Tobias share an evening of passion together. During this time, Tris tells Tobias that she loves him.
