CHAPTER 40: TOBIAS
Tobias, Peter, and Christina decide to meet up later and go over plans to enter the city. To their fortune, Amar wants to help them. He once also lived in Chicago and he does patrols now. He knows the roads and can get them a truck.
In the dorm now, Tobias wonders about how Cara forgave Tris for killing Will. Tobias is feeling guilty for the role he played in killing Uriah. He doesn’t want Zeke, Uriah’s brother, to hold him responsible for Uriah’s death. Cara suggests that Tobias tells the truth about what happened. Zeke needs to learn the role Tobias played and then he needs time to cope with the truth.
After dinner Amar meets up with the group who will enter the city. He gives them serum that will inoculate any memory-serum that they come into contact with. They will not be able to have their memories erased. Everybody but Peter injects themselves.
Christina takes a moment to speak to Tobias. She explains what will happen to people in Chicago if the reset does not occur. Evelyn has a death-serum that she’ll let loose on the Allegiants if they attack. The serum is in gas form and innocent lives will be lost. If the reset doesn’t happen people like Marcus, Evelyn, and Christina’s little sister will probably die. Christina wants to prevent any innocent lives from being lost, and she wants to prevent the Bureau from resetting everybody’s memories.
Tobias comes up with a new plan. He thinks that maybe he can reset the memory of either Evelyn or Marcus. They’re basically the ones who will lead the giant confrontation in Chicago. Evelyn is in charge of the factionless, while Marcus is in charge of the Allegiants. If Tobias can get at least one of them to change their plan then maybe a physical attack can be prevented.
The only complication that they face is that Amar thinks that they are going into Chicago just to inoculate family members. Amar will be driving them there. For this new plan to work Tobias will need to sneak away from the truck without Amar knowing what Tobias is up to. If they are caught, then at least Amar will remain innocent of their master plan.
