As the group runs towards the Griever Hole, Teresa and Thomas joke around telepathically with each other. Teresa, sarcastically, says that she’s excited to see the Grievers. Thomas says that she has to stay close so that he and Minho can protect her.

After some running, some of the boys begin slowing down in the back of the group. Not all of them, including Newt who has a limp, were meant to be Runners.

When the group makes it near the Cliff, they spot the Grievers. They’re just waiting for the group to approach. They’re acting like bodyguards, guarding the Cliff.

Soon, yet more Grieves begin to approach the group from all sides. There’s no escape now. The Grievers surround the group and hold their stance. Thomas isn’t sure what to do.

Alby comments on how this was a bad idea. Then, unexpectedly, Alby runs towards the Grievers that protect the Cliff. He flings himself at them, and they begin to tear him apart. Newt tries to run to help him, but Thomas is able to hold him back.

Minho snaps the group back into reality. He states that they have to take advantage of Alby’s sacrifice and proceed forward. Unfortunately, the other Grievers don’t seem to be appeased by Alby’s sacrifice. The Gladers will have to fight for their freedom.
