Thomas is utterly confused by his new surroundings. A wide array of boys surround him. He tries to take in his new surroundings. He finds himself in an open-area with an immense walled structure enclosing them. They are surrounded by walls within this large field. The boys poke fun at Thomas’ curiosity as he looks around.

After a while, he begins to question the others. Naturally, Thomas wants to know where he is, but he doesn’t get a direct answer. Instead, the kids try to figure out who Thomas’ Keeper will be or if he’ll just become a Slopper. Thomas is utterly confused.

Thomas continues to take in his new surroundings. The site seems ancient. There’s an old building in one corner with trees around it, a garden in another corner, a farm with livestock at another side, and a forest-like area.

Randomly, Thomas catches eyes with an angry, black-haired boy who stomps off. This kid is apparently filled with rage for some reason.

An older boy approaches Thomas. The seventeen-year old introduces himself as Alby. He promises to show Thomas around the next day. Thomas doesn’t accept Alby’s welcome; instead, he wanders off to sit alone below a tree. Thomas shouts out and asks for answers now.

Alby approaches and sits near him. He describes how natural it is to be scared right now. Alby admits that after Nick’s death, he doesn’t know how to properly introduce Thomas to his new surroundings. Luckily, another boy, named Newt approaches. Newt reassures Thomas that they’ll give him a tour tomorrow and some of his questions will be answered.

Alby goes onto describe the area as the Glade, and they are the Gladers. Thomas asks for answers as to why he’s there. Alby reacts coldly. He tells Thomas, a “shank,” to listen and to promptly learn the ways of his new life. He describes that the Runners are returning soon and the tour has to wait until tomorrow. Alby takes off.

Thomas begins to talk to Newt. Newt doesn’t answer any of Thomas’ questions; instead, he advises Thomas to learn to accept his new surroundings for now.

Their conversation is interrupted by a horrible scream that comes from the building in the distance. Newt seems annoyed at the “Med-jacks” who apparently aren’t doing their job correctly. He leaves and tells Thomas to find Chuckie.
