Thomas is left alone with Alby. Alby is weak, unable to move, but still alive. He manages to drag Alby to a crack. Then, he looks up at the ivy that grows up and down the ancient walls of the Maze. He decides to use the ivy to climb up the giant walls. He’ll also use the vines to hoist Alby upwards.

It takes him a great deal of energy, strength, and ingenuity, but Thomas is able to successfully bring himself and Alby up the ancient, cracked walls of the Maze. In the distance, he can slowly hear the robotic sounds of the Grievers approaching. He isn’t sure what to expect; however, he’s happy they’re not on the ground anymore.

Up on the wall, as the shrieks of the Grievers come closer, he notices a beetle blade spying on him. Its body has the word “wicked” written on it. He had seen the same words on the beetle blade he had chased through the Glades’ forest. Assuming that the beetle blade spies on people based on their movement, Thomas plays dead until it moves along.

Soon, Thomas is terrified to see a Griever down below.
