Thomas has tears in his eyes as daylight begins to fill the sky. He can’t get over the mysteriousness of the Cliff. It really is as if they’re up above the world in this Maze. Minho, on the other hand, can’t get over the fact that they’ve survived the night.
Minho, though, acknowledges the weirdness of the Cliff. Other Gladers have noted how things seem to disappear when they fall into the Cliff. The Grievers, as Thomas noted, seemed to have stopped screaming and screeching suddenly just as they fell into the Cliff; it wasn’t as if they continued to fall, but it was as if they just disappeared. Minho throws a rock down the Cliff to watch as it falls all the way down into nothingness.
Suddenly, it dawns on Thomas that Alby might still be hanging from the wall where he left him. Minho is excited at this fact. Thomas seeds the idea into Minho’s head that if Alby survived the night, maybe they could still save him with the serum back at the Glades. They begin running to Alby’s location.
As they approach Alby’s secret hiding spot, Minho describes the Grief Serum to Thomas. It is part of the supplies that the Creators send to them in the Box. Somehow, it saves kids who are going through the Changing.
As they approach the area where Alby is hanging out, the boys are greeted by a welcomed sight. The West Doors have opened and Newt has arrived with a few other Gladers. Thomas directs them to Alby, up on the wall. They truly have some explaining to do after the Med-jacks look them over.
Thomas makes his way back to the Homestead. The other boys look in awe as he passes with Minho. Thomas feels a sense of achievement as he passes the stare of Gally, the boy who has never liked Thomas.
Once up in a room, Thomas reflects on both the mysterious girl and the word “wicked” that is written on the beetle blades.
He slumbers off to asleep only to be awakened by Chuck later. Chuck is there to let him know that the Serum is working its magic on Alby.
