The Gathering finally begins. Teresa isn’t allowed inside. Furthermore, there are a few empty chairs, those of Gally and Zart. Otherwise, everything seems like the other meeting he attended.

Thomas begins to explain how the Maze was the ultimate test to weed out the strongest from the weakest. The strongest are going to escape and be tasked to do something important. The Maze doesn’t have a real solution; its purpose was to figure out who the best of the best are.

Thomas says that the Creators took them away from their homes when they were little to help with some kind of important undertaking. The boys were especially smart and so they were chosen. They were raised, taught, and prepped by the Creators away from their families. The creators even gave them the names they go by today: Alby, short for Albert Einstein; Newt, short for Isaac Newton; and Thomas, short for Thomas Edison.

Eventually, when the Maze was funded and built, the Creators wiped their memoires and sent them into the Glade so they could see what the boys were capable of. They wanted to see all the fixings of a society tasked to solve an impossible goal. Thomas, then, gives the big reveal: the Maze has no solution. They were just all part of one big social experiment.

Alby doesn’t get it. He doesn’t understand why Thomas recalls all of this after the Changing, when his memories didn’t help at all. Thomas explains that he’ll get to why he recalls more things than him.

Thomas goes onto explain how the deaths of the kids are important to the Creators because they only want the strongest to make it. The group isn’t too happy to hear this. They begin growing a bit restless, but Newt calms them down.

Thomas admits that he is hitting himself over the head for not realizing the code sooner. They took forever to figure out the code, when he was present when the Creators made it.
