The Tour of the place begins with the Box. It’s a floor-like elevator with double doors at the bottom. Alby says that Newbies come from the box monthly, while supplies come weekly. They haven’t a clue how it works or where the things come from.
The Tour continues with Alby pointing out the Gardens, where they get grow their fruits and vegetables; the Blood House, where they take care of livestock; the Homestead, a makeshift shelter; and the Deadheads, a forest area with a Graveyard in the back.
Alby tells Thomas that he will be trying out different jobs for now until he finds one that he’s well suited for. The boys all have different jobs with interesting titles, like the Slicers who cut up the livestock for food.
As the Tour goes on, Thomas can’t get over feelings of déjà vu as he looks over the place. It’s as if he’s already been there.
Thomas is led to the South Door of the giant walled maze. As they peer into the Maze, Alby describes how after two years of trying, they’ve made no progress in figuring the Maze out. At night, the walls of the Maze shift and everything they’ve mapped out changes.
Alby strictly forbids Thomas to ever enter the Maze. He warns him that the punishment will be severe if he does so. The only ones who can enter are the Runners.
Thomas knows he isn’t supposed to ask questions, yet he lets a question slip when he sees movement at the top of one of the walls. Something moved and entered the wall. Alby makes it clear that Thomas needs to save his questions for the end of the Tour. Reluctantly, though, Alby tells Thomas that what he saw was a “beetle blade” which is used by the “Creators” to watch them.
Suddenly, their conversation is interrupted by a loud alarm. Thomas is terrified and he questions Alby. Alby says that it’s the Box.
Everybody makes their way to the Box. Thomas runs into Newt who describes how weird of an occurrence this is. They’ve never had one person show up after another.
