The boys are perplexed. They don’t know what the note means and they don’t know why a girl just appeared from the Box.

Newt signals for the Med-jacks, the “doctors” of the group to come. They check the girl’s vitals. They say that she seems to be in okay shape, but she’s probably in a coma.

While they examine her, Alby warns everybody that if anybody touches her than they’ll be banished to the Maze.

Before long, the Med-jacks leave with the girl. They’re going to take her to the Homestead where she can hopefully wake up. Alby instruct the Med-jacks to keep a close eye on her.

Thomas feels a strange connection to the girl; however, he doesn’t know what it is. Although they press him for answers, Thomas assures Newt and Alby that he doesn’t know who she is.

Alby calls for a Gathering with all the Keepers to sort things out. Chuck describes the Gathering as a meeting that’s held when questions need to be answered.

Thomas and Chuck leave the scene to get some food. The kitchen area seems normal enough with things like a microwave, an oven, and dining tables. Chuck brings over some sandwiches and the two make conversation other. Thomas asks where the electricity comes from. Chuck doesn’t know.

Then, Thomas asks about the requirements for being a Runner. Thomas knows that he’ll work at different parts of the Glades under the supervision of different managers or “Keepers.” Thomas is curious as to when he’ll be trying out a job as a Runner. Chuck suggests that he asks the Runners when they come back later that day.

Thomas gets frustrated with Chuck’s lack of concrete answers, so he leaves and begins to explore the Glade by himself. He checks out the garden area with crops, the livestock area, and then the forest. He catches a glimpse of a lizard-like metallic creature. He knows the boys call it a “beetle blade,” a kind of drone that spies on the kids. He’s intrigued and chases it.
