After an hour of running in the Maze, Thomas realizes that he needs to turn back. He’s surprised at how well he remembers his way around the maze. It seems to be a little more than instinct.

Eventually, the physically fit Thomas returns to the Glades and heads to the Deadheads, the forest, for some alone time. There in the solitude of the forest, Thomas is able to slumber off to sleep.

In the morning, somehow, Chuck finds him. He gets him up to go get breakfast. As they make their way there, Thomas questions his own sanity. He knows he’s not crazy, but he isn’t sure how to convince Newt that the girl was somehow talking to him telepathically.

Chuck reveals that it was Newt who found Thomas in the forest last night. He told everybody to let Thomas get some shut eye, and he told them that they had decided to put Thomas in the Slammer the next day as punishment. Chuck also adds that he thinks it’s awesome that Thomas is going to be a Runner.

Soon after, during breakfast, Thomas asks about Gally. Chuck reveals that Gally ran into the Maze by himself after the Gathering and he hasn’t been seen since. Chuck theorizes that Gally returned only to be hiding out in secret with his thug-friends.

Their breakfast is interrupted by Newt who is there to take Thomas to the Slammer. Thomas actually looks forward to the Slammer since he’ll be able to have some peace and quiet while locked up.
