Thomas awakens to the Chuck’s voice. Chuck is thrilled to see that his friend is alive. He describes how they’ve kept him safe by locking him up in the Slammer when the Grievers come and then caring for him in the Homestead during normal hours.

Thomas asks if the Grievers have been following the same pattern of taking one boy each night. Chuck lets him know that this is indeed the case. Zart was even taken one night. Thomas, suddenly, knows why they’ve been taking one per night.

Next, Thomas asks for Chuck’s help in calling a Gathering. He , apparently, now has memories that he wants to share with the others.

When Chuck leaves, Thomas begins communicating with Teresa telepathically. She calls him a fool for doing what he did. Thomas tries to explain that he didn’t have much any other choice. He tells her that he’ll ask for her to be at the Gathering. There, at the Gathering, everything he learned will be revealed. He needs to gather his strength and his thoughts before he divulges anything. Lastly, he tells Teresa that the Creators want them to leave the Glades, but the Maze is a riddle without a solution. He has a way out, though. It’s a hard way out.

Newt got Chuck’s message and he comes in to talk to Thomas. He calls Thomas brave fool for what he did. Thomas reveals to Newt that everything they’ve been through is a kind of a battle of the fittest. The Creators are selecting the best of the best through this whole experiment. He now knows how to get out of there and he wants a Gathering held as soon as possible so he can go over things with them.
