The protagonist, Thomas, finds himself in a cage-like elevator that is ascending upwards. He can’t remember much of anything but for his name and a few faint images. Ever so slowly, he rises upwards.

About thirty-minutes later, after the shaft halts, Thomas realizes that he is stuck in this metal room without any way out. With only darkness to keep him company, he becomes fearful of his condition. He yells out for help.

Eventually, his calls for help are heard. Above him, a group of teenage boys begin to banter back and forth with each other. They call Thomas things like a “klunk” and a “Greenie.” One of them tells Thomas that there’s no going back to where he came from.

Before long, the boys hoist Thomas up and out of the elevator. Thomas has now reached the Glade.
