At the Gardens, Thomas is overseen by a strong Keeper named Zart. He makes conversation with Zart as they weed around corn stalks. Thomas learn that there are at least nine Keepers. He also learns about other jobs like the Sloppers, who are like custodians; and the Baggers, who are both the police and gravediggers of the group. After a bit of chitchat with Zart, Thomas loses his interest in talking. He begins to think of the girl who is still in the coma.
After a while, Thomas goes to the Kitchen for a work break. There, he joins Chuck for a snack. They observe an anxious Newt in the near distance. Newt opens up to them and tells them that he’s worried about two things: firstly, the mysterious girl is growing more frail and she’s talking in her sleep, saying some odd things; and secondly, Alby and Minho haven’t returned from the Maze yet.
Thomas suggests they send people into the Maze to look for the missing boys. Newt informs him that such a thing isn’t allowed.
Later, at dinnertime, the other Runners start coming back; however, Alby and Minho are nowhere to be found. Newt is visibly anxious. He is waiting for his friends at the West Doors. Chuck and Thomas join him. Thomas tries to convince him to send in other people to find them. Newt is headstrong on the rules: nobody is allowed out during the nighttime.
Chuck bluntly states that Minho and Alby must be dead. He walks off. With great sorrow in his face, Newt comes to the same conclusion as Chuck and he also walks off. With only minutes before the Maze is sealed off for the night, Thomas is left alone in front of the doors.
Suddenly, Thomas catches sight of Minho helping an injured Alby back towards the Glades. The walls are closing fast and the Doors will be sealed shut soon. Thomas calls back to Newt. Meanwhile, Minho now begins to drag a fallen Alby back towards the Doors.
Newt begins to approach the Doors, yelling at Thomas to stay inside. Thomas, instinctively, runs into the Maze just in time to hear the Doors shut behind him.
