That night, the boys all squeeze into the Homestead. Newt admits that he’s never been so close to giving up. He knows, though, that they must press forward. Alby seems lost in his thoughts. Minho tries to pick up their spirits. He points out that they can’t give up just yet.

Furthermore, Minho has a plan. Tomorrow, they’re going to get ready to explore the Maze for a longer time period that ever. Alby is opposed to it. Minho argues that plenty of the Runners, himself and Thomas included, would sacrifice themselves if it led to a potential discovery being made in the Maze. Maybe, some kind of exit appears when the walls move at night.

Alby continues to argue against exploring the Maze during the night. He thinks it’s better for them to stay safe in the Homestead than to run towards the Grievers. Newt tries to convince him otherwise.

Finally, Alby succumbs and admits that maybe he shouldn’t be leader anymore. He is different after the Changing, and he will just go ahead and do whatever the other boys see fit. He suggests that maybe they just put him in charge of the Maps. Alby, then, says that maybe they should be in the Map Room right now trying to piece a pattern together. With that being said, he decides to leave the safety of the Homestead for the Map Room right now. He leaves alone.

Everybody else squeezes in the Homestead. Thomas can’t help but feel uneasy, despite all the precautions they’ve taken. The windows and doors are sealed, everybody has their flashlights off, and most people have weapons.

Thomas, eventually, is able to slumber off; however, he is awoken later by the sounds of Grievers outside. He can hear their approach, he can hear them on the Homestead, and then they can all hear one right outside the nearest window.

They all cower off, near a wall, expecting the creature to come bounding through the window. What they don’t expect, though, is for somebody to come through the door. It’s Gally. Somehow, he’s returned.
