Thomas peers at the building where some boys are watching from outside. Clearly, something is going on inside that they’re curious about.

His attention is diverted by a metal-type creature he glances in the tree above him. Thomas only caught a brief glance of it, so he continues looking upward to figure out what it was. Just then, Chuck makes his appearance and he describes to Thomas that he saw a beetle blade. Chuck says that unless provoked, it’s harmless.

The screams continue from the wooden home. Chuck says that an incredibly sick boy, Ben, is inside. He describes that Ben got back in time for the serum and that he should be okay eventually. Chuck also tells Thomas that Ben was attacked by a Griever.

Chuck is also nice enough to explain why people are calling Thomas a Greenbean. Apparently, it’s a term for the freshest arrival to the Glade. Chuck is the second-freshest arrival right after Thomas.

Thomas takes a moment to reflect on things that he can remember. He can’t remember much of anything, just bits and pieces of things. He even asks Chuck how old he thinks he is. Chuck assumes he’s around the age of sixteen.

Chuck comforts Thomas a bit by letting him know that things will become normal for him before long. Life isn’t easy for them but it’s easier than living in “klunk” (poo).

Chuck asks for Thomas’ name. Apparently, it’s the one thing that all the boys can remember. Then, Chuck tells Thomas that he will show him the ropes of the place. Thomas, realizing that Chuck has only been there a month, erupts at Chuck with a little bit of anger. He doesn’t know how Chuck can be of any help when Chuck himself barely knows anything about the Glade.

Thomas makes his way into the old house. There, he’s a little perplexed by electric lights on the ceiling and a picture of an old woman on a wall.

Inside, he finds the black-haired boy from earlier. The boy won’t let Thomas go upstairs. Thomas is determined to make his way up to talk to Newt and Alby.

The boy explains that he’s suspicious of Thomas because he saw visions of him when he was going through the Changing. Apparently, after being stung by a Griever people go through the Changing; fortunately, the serum that Chuck mentioned must reverse and stop the Changing.

Thomas continues to insist on going up to talk to Newt. Surprisingly, the boy backs away and gives Thomas permission to go up. Before leaving, Thomas finds out that the boy is named Gally. There must be some kind of power struggle in play because Gally believes he should be in charge of everybody.

Thomas, eventually, continues up the stairs to find Newt and Alby. Chuck, who was also downstairs, warned him not to go up but his warning was pointless.

Before long, Thomas finds what he was looking for. Alby and Newt are at Ben’s bedside caring for him. Ben looks like a hideous creature with green veins and red eyes, among other scary attributes. Thomas is stunned by the brief glimpse of Ben. Alby quickly forces Thomas out of the room.

Thomas feels humiliated as he goes downstairs. The others knew the horror he would see and they were just anticipating his scared reaction. Luckily, Chuck is there. Chuck goes off to get food from Frypan and they plan to meet up soon to eat.
