Resources  for Language Arts Classrooms

Alby begins to question Thomas. He doesn’t understand how they’re going to handle the Grievers that come at them. Moreover, he suspects that Thomas doesn’t have to worry about the Grievers since he helped the Creators in the first place.

Minho defends Thomas. He’s been in terrible circumstances versus the Grievers before, including most recently when they attacked and stung him.

Unexpectedly, Alby begins shouting out. He’s afraid to go back to what their lives were like before the Glades. Alby even admits to burning the Map Room himself and making it look like it was somebody like Gally who did it. Alby is so afraid of going back from where they came from. He saw awful things during his Changing. Alby saw a diseased land and a terrible thing called the Flare.

Minho thinks Alby is crazy. Life here, where death is inevitable, has to be worse than whatever is going on in the real world.

Frypan thinks everything that is being discussed is crazy. He doesn’t want to risk his life being chased by a bunch of Grievers.

Suddenly, the other Keepers chime in and the place erupts in a bunch of loud talking. Newt quiets them all down and allows Thomas to continue talking.

Thomas hypothesizes that the Creators don’t want everybody to be killed by the Grievers. He thinks that the Grievers will continue just taking one person per day, including somebody when they try to make it through the Griever Hole. If somebody sacrifices themselves when they make the leap off the Cliff, then they might be okay. Thomas volunteers himself to be taken by the Grievers.
