Minho and Thomas make their way through one of the routes that never changes. It leads from Section Eight to Section One. After about five turns, Minho makes a note on a notepad. He describes how he makes these little notes to remind him of differences he’s noted compared to yesterday.

As he runs, Minho does it all. He writes down notes on his notepad, and he leaves “breadcrumbs” on the ground to help him remember which way to go back. The “breadcrumbs” are pieces of ivy that he cuts from off of the wall. Soon, Thomas is practicing the same task of cutting ivy as they go along.

Eventually, the two stop for a break. The drink water and munch on snacks. While they eat, Thomas questions Minho about the incident in the Maze when he went with Alby to check out the “dead” Griever. Minho says that the Griever must have been injured. He says the creature was trying to get away from the area.

Thomas’ mind gets clicking and he wonders where the Griever went to heal up. Minho thinks it would be suicide to follow the Grievers to wherever they come from.

The two do some more running and then stop again for a snack. When they stop, Thomas begins to question Minho about the beetle blades. Minho hasn’t much of a clue about them.

As they continue eating, Thomas notices something written on the wall. It reads, “World in catastrophe: killzone experiment department.” Minho says that the words are scribbled everywhere.

Eventually, the duo has to head back to the Glades. Thomas wishes they could explore a little bit more, but there’s no time. Thomas begins seeing the futility, the pointlessness, of being a Runner.

That night Teresa speaks to Thomas again telepathically. She lets him know that she has started the Ending, whatever that is.
