Thomas can’t believe that somebody wants to kill him. Thomas, as far as he can remember, has done nothing malicious towards Gally.

Minho suggests that Gally has been on the verge of losing it; maybe, that time has finally come. Newt calls out Minho for being so aggressive. He agitated the already irritable Gally.

Winston speaks up and points out that Gally has some memories after surviving the Changing. There might be some significance to what he’s saying. Frypan, though, discredits the psycho actions and memories of Gally.

Thomas, not being able to hold his tongue anymore, asks for permission to speak. He brings back the point of the Gathering back to the Keepers’ attention. They’re there to figure out what to do with Thomas. The Keepers agree that they have to go on with deciding their verdict.

Thomas has a chance to defend himself before they decide his fate. He says that he saw people who needed to help and so he broke the Number One Rule to unselfishly help them. Thomas sees his disregard of the rule as worth it and he doesn’t care if he’s punished for it.

Newt, next, recommends what they should do with Thomas. They should lock up Thomas for one day and then make him an official Runner the next day. He’ll need to prove himself as a Runner before becoming a Keeper. The others vote on Newt’s recommendation and it passes, with only Winston objecting to it. Things about Thomas are just too fishy for Winston to ignore.

The group begins to leave. Minho, Newt, and Thomas are the only ones to remain in the room. Minho explains that he really doesn’t want Thomas to take over for him as Keeper; he just used that courtroom tactic to bring up the praise for Thomas and hopefully lesson his sentence.

The conversation among the boys is interrupted by Chuck. Alby, who is recovering still, has been asking to speak to Thomas.
