Once they’re away from the Homestead, Newt insists that the two go over to get some food. They need to have a little chat as they eat.
When their lunch together ensues, Newt reveals that nobody who has gone through the Changing has ever tried to speak about what they learned before. Alby was the first to do so. They speculate that his openness to talk is what led to his attempted suicide by self-strangulation.
Newt, then, reveals the plan for the rest of the day. Firstly, in the name of order, they’ll find and lock up Gally. Then, Thomas is to stay near Newt and away from the other boys for the remainder of the day. The next day Thomas is going to serve his one-day jail punishment, and then following that he’ll join the Runners.
Soon after, Newt gets to the heart of the matter. There’s something different about Thomas and they all know it. Newt wants to help Thomas remember whatever he can about his past. Thomas reflects in his own head about how familiar things seem to him in the Glade. He reveals this to Newt. Newt, then, asks Thomas to continue trying his hardest to remember things from his past.
After their little conversation, Newt reveals the location of their next pit stop. They’re going to go pay a visit to the mysterious girl. Newt hopes that seeing her will help Thomas remember something. He, then, also reveals that if all else fails they can force the Changing upon Thomas to help him remember.
Once in the girl’s room, Thomas begins to feel a little uneasy. The Med-jack, Clint, is there caring for the girl. He lets Newt know that the girl keeps mumbling things in her sleep. She says gibberish about the Creators and she speaks out Thomas’ name.
Clint leaves the room when Newt asks for a report on the girl’s sleepy whispers. Thomas, then, has the opportunity to really focus on remembering the girl. As he really concentrates on her, he hears her name whispered as if from somebody else. Her name, according to Thomas, is Teresa. Thomas freaks out because he swears it was the girl who spoke to him inside of his mind.
Suddenly, the telepathic link that he has with the girl begins to continue spurting out new tidbits of knowledge. She’s there to serve as a trigger for the Trials. She also reveals that the end is coming and things are going to change.
Thomas totally freaks out and he jolts out of the Homestead and straight into the Maze. He still can hear her though. She says that they’re the culprits who started things
