Resources  for Language Arts Classrooms

In the morning before anybody is awake, Minho gets Thomas up. He has him go with him to the Homestead to choose a pair of shoes from a storage closet. Additionally, Minho gives Thomas a watch to keep track of time (very important in the Maze), appropriate running clothes, and some other gear.

Minho remarks on how they can ask the Creators for stuff by sending notes down into the Box. They only get some of the things they ask for.

Next, Minho takes Thomas down into the basement for a real treat. He is going to allow him to get a weapon from a secret storage area. The weapon storage room has many weapons of all sorts, like bows and arrows, swords, poles, and knives. Everything but the knives seem unused. Minho and Thomas grab a few knives.

Thomas remarks on how dangerous it is to have so many weapons lying about. Minho tells Thomas that only a very select few have keys to get into the weapons room.

After breakfast, the two make their way to the Map Room. Thomas notes a table in the middle surrounded by eight chairs; each chair has paper in front of it on the table. Also, there are eight chests in the room.

Next, Minho grabs a piece of paper and starts sketching out the Maze for Thomas to look at. He explains how there are four Doors inside the maze that lead to different sections. In total, there are eight sections in the maze. While the Doors always seem to stay in the same spots, the walls in the sections are always changing. This makes it impossible to find an exit to the Maze. They’ve found the Cliff, but that isn’t an exit anybody wants to use.

Minho goes onto describe how they always have eight Runners so each Runner can explore a different section each day. When they come back following their day of exploration, they draw out what they can recall; then, their maps are stored in their section’s chest.

Minho also describes that while they’ve noted patterns in the walls’ movements, they have never been able to find a way out of the Maze. Thomas suggests that maybe the exit becomes apparent at night when the walls are moving around; he suggests that maybe they should try staying a night out there to find an exit. Minho is annoyed by this suggestion, stating that they already attempted doing so but not without the cost of lives. Nobody survived the Maze at night until Thomas came around.

Thomas asks Minho if they’ve discovered anything worthwhile recently. Minho remarks that they haven’t had any luck in the Maze, but they have to keep the search going. Something might come up at some point.

Soon, the two leave the Homestead to make their way to the Maze.
