Thomas begins to reflect on the reality of his new existence as he waits for Chuck to return with food. He looks over at the elevator where he was brought to this world, wishing he could leave this new place.

Thomas is happy when Chuck comes back. Chuck brings Thomas a ham sandwich and it makes him a little happy.

Thomas, then, proceeds to make conversation with Chuck. He asks him about Ben. Chuck doesn’t have any answers. Then, he asks him about the area beyond the walls but Chuck also says he doesn’t know.

Frustrated at the lack of answers, Thomas begins to walk towards an opening at the walls. He had hoped to do some exploring; luckily, Chuck stops and warns him. He lets Thomas know that the gap will be closed up by giant doors soon. Chuck remarks on how the Runners will come back just before the walls close up for the night. He adds that the walls within the maze also will shift inside.

Thomas is curious when Chuck calls the giant walled structure a “maze”. Chuck realizes he let his tongue slip and he walks off. Apparently, Thomas isn’t supposed to know of the maze.

Soon after, the runners come shooting out from the inside of the maze. They make their way past Thomas and to the building behind him.

Before Thomas could make a move, Chuck returns to get him. Thomas is bewildered by the whole scene. He barely gets any questions out before the walls of the maze begin to shift. Just as Chuck described, the entrance to the maze seals up. He’s perplexed on how the whole thing works and what its purpose must be. With questions still in mind, he leaves to go to bed.
