Ben seems to look better than before, but he’s still not looking good. Alby appears in the distance with a bow and arrow aimed at Ben. Alby warns Ben to back off.

Ben also has a warning: it’s Thomas that Alby should be pointing the bow and arrow at. Ben goes onto
describe how Thomas will lead them into trouble by attempting to get them out through the Maze. Ben says
that they’re better off dead than following Thomas.

With no hesitation, Ben lunges at Thomas with a knife in hand. Alby fires his arrow straight at Ben,
striking him dead. The boys leave the scene. Thomas is dumbfounded by the whole ordeal. He throws up profusely before he leaves the forest.

That night Thomas has trouble falling asleep. Chuck, trying to make him feel better, says that what happened to Thomas was not a first. Regardless, Thomas is haunted by what happened.

The next day, Thomas is in a state of depression. Chuck has to force him around.

Eventually, he finds himself in the Blood House with the livestock. It’s his first stop where he’ll be trying out a new job. Newt is there and he tries to comfort Thomas a bit after his ordeal yesterday. Thomas thinks the job will be good for him. Newt remarks on how the responsibilities everybody has are what helps the boys get through their own depressions.

Thomas inquires about the girl and he learns that she’s still in a coma.

After chatting a bit with Newt, Thomas is introduced to the Blood House’s Keeper, Winston. Winston has Thomas take care of the animals for a bit. Then, Thomas sits through a rather unpleasant experience, the slaughter of a pig. Thomas walks away from the scene knowing that the Blood House is not the place for him.

As he walks back to the Glade, Thomas catches sight of a Runner coming out of the West Door of the Maze. The strong Asian Runner falls from exhaustion.
