After the Gathering, Newt finds Thomas. He’s still with Teresa at the Box. Newt explains how each and every Keeper has agreed to go through with Thomas’ plan. They still need to tell all the Gladers, and they know that not all of them will be okay with pursuing the plan.

After a while, the Keepers get the word out to the Gladers. Most agree to go through with the undertaking. Thomas still has his doubts about how many people will die. He’s not sure if the Grievers will be satisfied with one sacrifice or if they’ll be searching for more. He doesn’t let anybody know of his uncertainty.  

Next, the group begins to prepare. Those willing to go through with the plan begin getting all the provisions and weapons they’ll need ready. Meanwhile, Minho ventures out to the Griever Hole with some Runners to make sure that the exit is still working.  

Thomas and Teresa are tasked with the most important part of the plan. They must punch in the code words into the computer. Together, the deliberate on what they’ll need to do and who they’ll ask to help them. They’ll need to have Minho and Newt around as backup just in case the telepathic duo fails at entering the code.

As Thomas and Teresa talk, they finally figure out what “wicked” stands for. It’s an acronym for the words that Thomas had seen sprawled around the walls of the Maze: “world in catastrophe: killzone experiment department.”

Thomas is a little jittery about the whole plan. Teresa reassures him that they have no other choice but to do this.
