From a nearby room, Thomas can hear Alby fighting off the Changing. He wonders if death would have been better than what Alby is experiencing right now.

When dismissed from the Med-jacks care, Thomas reflects on everything. He’s still hurting from his many cuts and bruises. Moreover, he’s hurting just as badly from the emotional anguish that the Maze left on him. To make matters worse, he can still hear Alby’s torturous screams from afar.

Later that evening, Chuck joins Thomas. Thomas has been hanging out alone at the edge of the forest. Chuck brings Thomas food, as well as news of what a popular person he has now become. Tales of his Maze heroics are being told everywhere in the Glade. Thomas is slightly pleased with his new found popularity, but he still feels terrible at the realities of his new life in the Glade.

After a little bit, Newt approaches with an update on Alby. Alby is zonked out asleep as the Serum works on him. He may scream here and there, but he should eventually return to his old self again.

Thomas pressures Newt into giving him details on the Changing. Newt is an emotional mess, but he describes what the Serum does. First, the Serum allows the boys to remember everything from before the Glades; it’s as if they never lost their memory at all. Then, the Serum wipes those memories away and they come back to face their new reality in the Glades again.

Next, Newt begins to talk about the real reason why he approached Thomas. Thomas broke the rules by entering the Maze. While some of the boys now look up to him, others don’t look upon him so favorably. Tomorrow, they’re going to hold a Gathering to figure out if Thomas should be punished.
